Does Kamala Harris wear a wig? What’s up with the vice presidential candidate’s hair? It looks amazing! And why was last night’s VP debate all about tresses? From the fly hanging out in Mike Pence’s coif to Kamala Harris’ wig speculations – is this what politics in 2020 has come to?
Beauty standards for women of colour
Throughout colonial history the attributes of a woman of colour were seen as less beautiful than those of her European counterpart. To fit the imposed beauty standards, she had to be lighter skinned, have smoother hair and be soft spoken and demure.
Although times have changed, there’s still immense pressure for women to be seen as perfect – especially when in the limelight. So it would be understandable if Harris did wear a wig to last night’s VP debate.
Kamala Harris’ ethnicity
Kamala Harris was born to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, which is an important factor to consider when speculating about her hair.
Indian hair is known for its smooth and silky appearance and is infamously used for weaves and wigs alike, while Jamaican hair is often a much harder mane to maintain.
Due to its fullness and high maintenance needs, many black people often choose to have their hair relaxed or throw a wig on, as trying to style it can be time-consuming. Now, while Harris could easily afford a team of hairstylists dedicated to getting her ready, who has the time for that?
Kamala Harris was raised to appreciate her heritage, as explained in this video. Bonus – you can also see what Harris looked like as a teenager!
Although heir hair growing up isn’t coifed and she’s rocking a vintage ’do, you can see it doesn’t hold the same body as Jamaican hair, the texture seems more similar to that of Indian hair.
Does Kamala Harris wear a wig?
Harris states in an interview with The Cut: “Sometimes I swim if it’s not going to create an issue with my hair.” We can’t make heads or tails of this comment. While any woman knows chlorine will instantly dry out your hair, we also know to wear a swim cap to protect it!
The only real reason not to wear one would be if it couldn’t fit over braids, say…like those used to sew a wig into?
Twitter users don’t seem too phased though, showing love for Kamala Harris’ hair and her hairdresser:
Although she could be wearing a wig, personally I’m more concerned about the fly on the wall…hair I mean HAIR.
The fly in Mike Pence’s hair stole the show
While last night VP candidate Kamala Harris’ hair seemed to have a bit more body, it could be she was simply having a good hair day. Or an especially bad one and might have had to don a wig for the occasion.
Wig or no wig, Kamala Harris’ hair was admired by viewers and is up there with Mike Pence’s fly buddy on the list of debate highlights. That’s 2020 for you.
