Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has been released on Netflix and the ten-episode series tells the story of serial killer Dahmer, who was also known as the Milwaukee Monster.
The series has prompted interest in Dahmer’s grandma, Catherine Hughes, with whom the killer lived when he committed a number of his murders. People want to know whether she knew about his activity and survived his depraved activities.
Let’s take a look at what happened to Hughes and who plays her in the Netflix series…
Did Dahmer kill his grandmother?
No. Although he undertook criminal activity in her house, Dahmer did not kill his grandmother, Catherine Hughes. Dahmer moved in with his grandmother at her home in West Allis, near Milwaukee, in 1981.
People reports Catherine told Dahmer’s father, Lionel, she had started finding strange items such aa a male mannequin in her grandson’s closet and a .357 Magnum under his bed. She also noticed a foul smell emanating from the garage.
Lionel told People that Catherine Hughes was reduced to “sitting like a frightened animal” following her grandson’s arrest due to the amount of reporters camped outside her home. She died in December 1992.
What happened at Hughes’ house?
Even though his second victim, Steven Tuomi, was murdered in a hotel room, Dahmer transported his body to Catherine’s home, where he dismembered it.
Another three victims faced the same fate in Catherine’s basement. However, Catherine claimed to be unaware of the murderous incidents, Distractify reports.
Catherine did, however, grow tired of the smell coming from her basement and forced her grandson to move out in 1988. Dahmer moved back in three months later before moving out for good in 1990.
Who plays Dahmer’s grandmother?
Dahmer’s grandma is played by Michael Learned, who is best known for her role as Olivia in The Waltons. She has also appeared in Scrubs, General Hospital, and The Young And The Restless.
Michael told Fox News she felt “privileged” to work with Ryan Murphy as she has “admired everything” he has produced so far.
“I didn’t actually meet Ryan until I was on the set. I recognized him immediately and walked over to give him a big thank-you hug. I can only say I love to work and the scripts were beautifully written,” she said.
Who plays Dahmer?
Dahmer is played by Evan Peters, who you may recognise from other Ryan Murphy shows such as American Horror Story and Pose. Peters has also starred in the X-Men film series as Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver as well as in Marvel Cinematic Universe series WandaVision.
The 35-year-old is from St Louis, Missouri, and has won several awards including a Primetime Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie category for his role in Mare Of Easttown.
When discussing playing Dahmer in the Netflix series, Peters said: “It felt important to be respectful to the victims, to the victims’ families, to try to tell the story as authentically as we could.”
