New South Korean television series True Beauty’s first episodes aired in early December. Who is 23-year-old male lead Cha Eun-woo, who plays love interest Lee Su-ho?

Cha Eun-woo before True Beauty

Cha Eun-woo is the professional name of Lee Dong-min, a South Korean actor, singer and model. Born in 1997, Eun-woo is 23 years old, and has been a member of K-pop group Astro since February 2016.

Originally, he is from Gyeonggi Province, the region surrounding the capital. In 2016, he graduated from Harlem Multi Art School, a Seoul co-ed high school specialising in performing arts.

Eun-woo is currently studying at Sungkyunkwan University, one of the world’s oldest education institutions, majoring in performing arts.

Eun-woo began his career as an actor in 2014 with a minor role in the film My Brilliant Life. However, he first adopted his professional moniker (Cha Eun-woo) the following year, for a role in the TV series To Be Continued.

He has since held roles in a number of shorts and TV series, all while recording and performing as a member of KPop group Astro.

In True Beauty, Cha Eun-woo plays Lee Su-ho, a high school student with a troubled past.

He seems to have it all: he is a great basketball player, gets good grades and has money, as well as good looks. However, as a result of a tragic incident from his past, involving his dysfunctional family, Su-ho hates being the centre of attraction.

What is True Beauty about?

True Beauty follows the lives of three high school students, Im Ju-kyung, Lee Su-ho and Han Seo-jun.

Im Ju-kyung, the female lead, has an inferiority complex about her appearance. As a result of her insecurities, and because she is bullied by her high school peers, she begins to contemplate suicide.

However, she meets Lee Su-ho just in time, at the top of a high-rise building. He stops her from jumping and they become friends. One of the things they share is an interest in horror comic books.

Ju-kyung learns how to apply makeup by watching tutorial videos, as a defence against the students that bully her. Because of this, her popularity soars, and those who once bullied her soon call her a “goddess”.

The show consists of 16 episodes, with a runtime of 70 minutes.

Episode 1 premiered on 9 December 2020, with just over a million viewers. The final episode will air on 28 January 2021.

Producers got off to a quick start in October, when they held their first script reading session. Soon afterwards, in November, they released the first production stills. True Beauty premiered on 9 December.

Outside of South Korea, it is available for streaming through Viu and Rakuten VIKI.
