Gossip Girl’s reboot references a famous perfume
The original Gossip Girl finished back in 2012 but returned back with a bang in 2021, featuring a whole new cast with contemporary storylines, woke references and a lot of drama.
Part two of the series has been available to stream on HBO Max since 25 November, but UK viewers will likely have to wait a month before the BBC iPlayer drop, as part one was released around six weeks after its US premiere.
While the episodes are yet to be viewed by all fans, many have already pointed out the cringey references throughout the show.
Gossip Girl features a mention of a trending perfume when Max Wolfe is speaking to his father about the recent breakdown of his parent’s marriage.
Max and his dad are mid-conversation when Gideon Wolfe asks:
“Wait. Do you smell that?”
After his son jokes that he only smells alcohol, Claridge’s and Ruinart to be precise, Gideon confirms that he smells Baccarat Rouge 540.
Max responds by beginning to state that the only person he knows wearing that is his birth mother, before Saskia Bates enters their house wearing a very questionable rainbow-coloured outfit.
What is Baccarat Rouge 540?
Baccarat Rouge 540 is a scent created by Maison Francis Kurkdjian with top notes smelling of jasmine and saffron, the middle note being amberwood and base notes smelling of fir resin and cedar.
With an extremely high price point, costing over £200 ($264.88) for 70ml, the scent is well known among wealthy people.
This famous fragrance became particularly popular in 2021 and is now supposedly referenced by many people to describe the smell of obviously rich individuals.
Luxury items expert @charlesgross previously shared his opinions on the Maison Francis Kurkdjian fragrance via TikTok.

Baccarat Rouge 540 is now worn by a lot of people who essentially want everyone around to know they have a lot of money.
Heres why GG viewers can’t stop cringing
Gossip Girl viewers soon picked up on the familiar fragrance reference and took to social media to share their thoughts.
Some fans suggested this scene was the most unrealistic part of the series’ reboot, as many people now wear Baccarat Rouge 540 and therefore not just Max’s birth mother.
Viewers even asked which intern possibly found the GG references, stating that they both love and hate that they understood the particular perfume shoutout.
Others were simply shocked to hear such a modern-day mention of Baccarat Rouge 540 in the drama show.
