Ahead of this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards, we’re taking a look at the most awkward moments from 2021’s 73rd Primetime Emmy bash.

The excitement of watching a live event like the Emmys is you never know what to expect and last year’s event was full of shocking moments. These are some of the scenarios we definitely don’t want to repeat this year…

Seth Rogen’s covid rant

Seth Rogen was the first presenter onstage and quickly acknowledged covid safety measures at the event. Seth questioned why the event was indoors as the pandemic continued.

“What are we doing?” he asked the audience. “They said this was outdoors. It’s not! They lied to us! We’re in a hermetically sealed tent right now. Why is there a roof?” He further questioned, tongue in cheek, that it seemed “more important we have three chandeliers than making sure we don’t kill Eugene Levy tonight”.

The event was held in a tent at the Event Deck at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles.

Rita Wilson rapping on red carpet

Rita Wilson presented at the Emmys as E!’s Red Carpet host. She called Karamo Brown, who she was wearing, by rapping: “‘I don’t pop Molly, I rock Tom Ford!’”

It’s a line from Jay-Z’s 2013 song Tom Ford. She also rapped while onstage at the Emmy Awards, opening with Cedric the Entertainer in tribute to late rapper Biz Markie.

Hannah Waddingham shouting in her acceptance speech with pure joy

Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham accepted the award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. During her emotional speech Hannah pointed out fellow nominee and co-star Juno Temple was just as deserving of the Emmy award.

“I swear to God, if I could break off one of her arms and give it to you… because that’s what you are to me,” she said. “There’s no Rebecca without Keeley.”

During the speech, she almost began shouting through the microphone she was so overjoyed.

Queen’s Gambit acceptance speech went way over the ‘warning to stop talking’ music

The Queen’s Gambit director, Scott Frank, won the outstanding director of a drama series award. He gave a very long acceptance speech and, even with some hints to wrap it up, wasn’t going to stop anytime soon.

The Emmys has a tight schedule and most speeches have a time limit. Every winner knew their time was up when the music started to play, but Frank decided to ignore the music not once, but twice. He even told them to stop the music because he wasn’t finished, pretty awkward if you ask us…

Kim Jeong skit

Ken Jeong’s skit about having trouble getting past Emmy security was extremely long and very awkward. Jeong finally got the results envelope out of his bag and presented the award to Saturday Night Live outside the venue after getting fake locked out for not having the proper covid paperwork.
