Squid Game on Netflix

Squid Game arrived on Netflix on Friday, 17 September.

The Korean mini-series follows a mysterious organization as it recruits down-on-their-luck Koreans who are in tremendous amounts of debt.

The lucky (or unlucky) chosen ones must compete in a giant series of games that will reward them with millions of dollars (billions of won) if they make it to the end.

The games being played are all children’s games, things that most Korean children played in their youth, and some of which you might recognize.

But there’s a catch – these children’s games all have deadly consequences if you lose.

According to Forbes, the games are unspeakably brutal. Over 450 players start, but at the end of game one, Red Light Green Light, players who have failed to stop moving on Red Lights are all executed by sniper rifle fire.

All of this is enforced by a mysterious, shadow organization serving one larger leader – in the likes of the Japanese manga-inspired thriller Alice in Borderland.

What’s the purpose of all this? We’re not sure, but the drama is fascinating to watch unfold as players form alliances, betray one another or even vote to leave, which is possible, but with everyone so desperate for cash, they always opt to keep going in the end.
