Who was Anne Williams' husband as ITV's new drama Anne premieres?

ITV’s new drama Anne follows the story of campaigner Anne Williams, who began fighting for justice for her son 15-year-old son Kevin and the other victims who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

As the series premieres this week, some are curious to know who Anne Williams’ husband Steve was, who is also portrayed within the series.

Who was Anne Williams’ husband?

Hillsborough campaigner and activist Anne Williams was married to husband, Steve Williams.

Steve was the step-father to Anne’s son Kevin who died as part of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Anne sadly passed away, aged 62 in 2013, after battling bowel cancer, with Steve over the years seen to have since kept to himself.

Who is Steve portrayed by in ITV’s Anne?

Steve Williams will be portrayed by actor Stephen Walters, known for his roles in Outlander and Silent Witness. Ahead of his part on the ITV series, the actor revealed he was able to meet and speak with Williams.

Walters opened up on the experience of meeting the real-life person behind his character as he and Maxine Peake who plays Anne in the series appeared on This Morning last month (December).

On the show he explained, while it was a “gift” to have met Steve, he didn’t “impersonate” him. He added: “When you’re playing somebody who’s real in a biographical sense, you want to do [them] justice.”

How to watch Anne

The four-part series will premiere on ITV tonight, Sunday 2 January, at 9pm and will take the same time slot on the channel over the next few days as the remaining three episodes air.

The episodes will also be available to watch on the ITV hub after they have aired, so you can catch up on missed episodes there.
