Alex Landi stars in Doja Cat’s latest music video, Kiss Me More ft SZA, as a spaceman exploring an alien land in a punt. Given his ongoing role as openly gay Dr Nico Kim, the steamy scenes that end the video have got Landi’s fans wondering about his sexuality. Is Alex Landi gay in real life? Does he have a girlfriend?
Is Alex Landi gay in real life?
No, despite the fact that he plays Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital’s first openly gay male character, Alex Landi is not gay. At least, not publicly.
Landi plays Dr Nico Kim in Grey’s Anatomy. He has spoken publicly about what it is like to play a gay character as a straight man.
He recognises that “not all actors have equal opportunities” in the film and TV industry, he told Attitude Magazine in 2019.

However, in his words, “the best actor wins”. In an ideal world, he says, sexuality would not pre-define a character.
Landi’s take on straight actors playing gay characters
“It comes down to the role breakdown”, he told Attitude.
“They [casting directors] request different things, and each actor has his own set of attributes of what he’s good at doing, and what he’s not good at doing.”
“When roles stop being pre-defined by ethnicity and sexual orientation”, Landi says, “that is when these discussions will no longer be at the forefront of casting decisions.”
Underrepresentation in TV and film
Landi told Gay Times that the role of Dr Nico Kim is a big deal deal for him.
“Asians are represented, I think, by less than 3 percent in entertainment, LGBTQ being less than 1 percent. For them to combine both of those categories into one role is super special.”
Incidentally Jake Borelli, who plays Alex Landi’s partner Dr Levi Schmitt on the show, came out as gay just minutes after Levi and Nico shared their first onscreen kiss.
That Borelli was originally cast as a straight character, Landi says, shows that the industry can “go both ways”.
Does he have a girlfriend?
Landi has not revealed that he is in a relationship in 2021. Nor does his recent social media output suggest that he is.
