The Karate Kid sequel is back and better than ever, with its fourth instalment of the show hitting the ground running. The series has also paid tribute to people who have contributed to the production of Cobra Kai and sadly passed away in 2021.

Cobra Kai’s Albert Omstead title card explained

The tribute at the end of episode seven was in honour of Albert Omstead. The title card read: “Albert Omstead 1982-2021 in memorial.” It is noted in previous credits for Cobra Kai that Omstead was in the camera and electrical department for the series. He has been credited on 21 episodes and was valued for his expertise in his profession, having worked on multiple other projects.

Albert Omstead was well known in the Marvel Universe and has worked on many of the big sets, with one of his first jobs being on Captain America: Civil War in 2016. From there he worked on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok, in between his multiple other production jobs.

Omstead has been credited as a crew member on series such as Creepshow, Dead Silent, Sweet Magnolias and Robbie. He usually worked as the grip, meaning he was responsible for organising, setting up, rigging, and planning lighting equipment on sets. His role as grip was demonstrated on hit series’ such as The Walking Dead, Atlanta and Stranger Things.

However, series are not the only thing Omstead worked on, he also lent his hand to some pretty big feature films such as Lovecraft Country, I Tonya, Baby Driver and Office Christmas Party.

When working on Cobra Kai, Omstead worked as a grip for 11 of the episodes and as chief assistant to the key grip or rigging best boy for another 10 episodes. This series was one of his last jobs before his death, along with his role on Stranger Things.

What happened to Albert Omstead?

Stranger Things actor Gaten Matarazzo paid tribute to the crew member, recalling that Albert tragically died in an accident whilst repairing his house.

Omstead died on 19 July 19 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia, in a freak accident whereby a retaining wall at his home collapsed. Albert was reportedly attempting to fix a leak that had been flooding his basement when a wall collapsed and tragically killed him.

The 38-year-old was a devoted husband and father to his one son and four stepchildren.
