How to turn off Read Receipts on Instagram as feature finally arrives
Instagram has introduced the ability to turn off read receipts this month, letting users secretly open messages without the sender knowing.

Instagram lets you turn off read receipts
Instagram announced the new feature on Twitter/X on Wednesday (January 24), writing: “Ever wanted to turn off DM read receipts? We got you.”
When turned off, people will not be able to see when you read their DM. If turned on, it says the word ‘seen’.
CEO Adam Mosseri previously announced that the feature was in testing on his Instagram Broadcast Channel in November 2023 and showed what the button might look like.
“Weve heard your feedback and started testing a new feature that allows you to turn off the read status,” he said. “In the near future, people wont have to show others when theyve been seen.”
How to turn off read receipts on Instagram
- Open Instagram
- Go to the DMs section
- Click on a chat
- Tap the person’s name
- Press ‘Privacy & Safety’
- Find ‘Read Receipts’
- Toggle the slider to ‘off’
If you can’t see the ‘read receipts’ section, try updating your app. As with all new features, the button is being rolled out slowly across the world, so it may take a little while to arrive.
Instagram users are going crazy
Instagram users have wanted the ability to turn off read receipts for years, so many are ecstatic that it’s finally arrived.
One person wrote on Twitter/X in capital letters: “YOU CAN NOW TURN OFF READ RECEIPTS ON INSTAGRAM.”
“So we now have the ability to turn off DM read receipts on Instagram?!” another wrote with a party face emoji.
A third person added: “Finally!!!”
It’s the first new feature to arrive since December when Instagram launched Add Yours Templates, which encourage users to add to a shared story.
