What the 2024 January Declutter Challenge is and how it works

The rules of the January Declutter Challenge are simple, although sticking to them may sometimes become hard. You dedicate 30 days of the first month of 2024 to declutter your personal space – house, office or it could even be your garage.

Each day is dedicated to removing the items that are least used or aren’t of any use anymore. This is the time of the year when you come face to face with the hoarder in you, and the confrontation may become overwhelming to some.

Although the challenge doesn’t require you to complete a certain task each day, such as cleaning your bathroom on day 1 and kitchen the next, the end goal is to declutter your house or any space entirely in 30 days, irrespective of the order you do it in.

The challenge has gained great prominence on social media platforms, especially TikTok, where users are documenting the progress they’ve made each day, while others are detailing the challenges they faced during the participation – demotivation being one of the biggest hurdles.

Finishing the 30-day January Declutter Challenge on your own to usher in the rest of the year with a cleaner house and clearer mindset would be fantastic. However, if you are struggling, there are ways to help you ace the challenge.

Simple tips to keep you motivated during the 30-day challenge

We understand the complicated emotions that one may grapple with when it comes to cleaning. As much as you’d wish to live in a cleaner space, achieving it needs dedication and motivation.

Let us help you with a few tips to navigate the challenge easily:

  • Set up a cleaning routine/schedule – Just thinking about cleaning your house tomorrow or on another day won’t yield any results and may bog you down further without a plan of action. So, set up a schedule for each day to keep up with the Declutter Challenge and this should be outside your work hours. You can use a spreadsheet and mark the tasks you plan on completing each day and stick to it.
  • Dedicate 15 minutes of your day – You have 30 days to complete the challenge, so using as little as 15 minutes of your day, whenever it’s convenient, can help you get rid of a lot of things. You can also invest more time in doing it if you wish to, but make sure you stick to it.
  • Make a list of new additions – Think about all the new things you could use once you get rid of the items you don’t need anymore. Create a list of furniture or home decor you want to include in your place in 2024, so you are motivated to make space for them.
  • Document your progress – It’s okay to not declutter your house for a day or two, but documenting the progress you’ve made each day will definitely push you to finish the challenge.

Although the challenge is just for January, it is aimed to keep your space clutter-free for the rest of the year. So, make sure you are only adding the things you need or use once you get rid of the clutter.
