Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has talked up Jose Mourinho ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Manchester City tomorrow.

Spurs sit second in the league and have a chance to go eight points clear of Pep Guardiola’s charges with a win.

In the Telegraph, Carragher underlined his view that Mourinho is still relevant in the current game, despite having been written off in some quarters after it turned sour at Chelsea and Manchester United.

He said he has seen signs Mourinho is finding a formula to best suit his players and moving Spurs closer to being title challengers.

“Mourinho is doing with Spurs what all world-class coaches do,” wrote Carragher. “Using his experience to find a formula to suit his players. We are starting to see more encouraging results.

“I would love Mourinho to re-establish himself as a winner. Imagine the reaction. It would be entertaining watching Mourinho note the frantic backtracking of those who argued he was yesterday’s man.

“I have never bought into the suggestion that Jose has been left behind tactically. The idea that a manager of his class and intelligence can not evolve and be successful again always struck me as illogical.

“Mourinho won the title with Chelsea as recently as 2015 and finished second at Old Trafford, so some of the observations directed at him over the last three years are disrespectful to his past and recent achievements.”

Carragher knows there’s more than one way to win football matches.

Mourinho’s more reactive, pragmatic style goes against the grain of modern football and some of his tactics in big matches didn’t work at United.

But it is going fairly smoothly at Tottenham, in Mourinho’s first full season in charge.

It is a year since Mourinho was appointed and he could make a major statement of his intent this season by seeing off old adversary Guardiola tomorrow.
