Following the abrupt end to yesterday’s quarter-final between Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime, fans have wondered why Alcaraz retired from the 2021 US Open.

Why did Carlos Alcaraz retire from US Open 2021?

Carlos Alcaraz retired in the second set of the US Open quarter-finals against Felix Auger-Aliassime yesterday (Tuesday, 7 September).

Alcaraz is said to have retired from the match after he injured a muscle in his right thigh, which caused him discomfort at the start of the tie.

Following the match, Alcaraz spoke about his injury. He said: “It’s really tough to end a great tournament like this. First of all, I have to take care of my body to stay healthy. It’s a long match and I didn’t feel good to still play, so I had to retire.”

The tennis player also addressed his retirement in a post on Instagram to his 231,000 followers as he stated he would return “stronger” next year.

He wrote: “I cannot describe in words what I experienced in @usopen, I can only thank all the public and all the people who have been supporting me from a distance. It has not been the end I expected, but I will return next year stronger.”

Who is Carlos Alcaraz’s coach?

The tennis player’s current coach is Juan Carlos Ferrero, a former world number one. Ferrero has worked alongside Alcaraz since he was 16.

Alcaraz opened up about his partnership with Ferrero in an interview with Tennis Majors last year as he spoke of the importance of balancing their partnership on and off the court.

He explained: “I am very happy working with Juan Carlos because on the court he is a big professional, he is very serious when he needs to be and when it is time to get to work.

“Off the court, he is this great person, very funny, and he is someone I can trust. That balance between the two is why I love working with him.”
