South Korea’s number one has produced an eye-catching 2021 on the ATP Tour. Here we look at the tennis star in more detail, including who Soonwoo Kwon’s parents are.

The 23-year-old achieved a career-high ranking of number 52 in the world after winning his first ATP Tour title in his first final, which came at 2021 Nur-Sultan.

He defeated Ilya Ivashka for his first ATP Tour quarter-final appearance in eighth attempts, to reach 2021 Eastbourne semi-final as lucky loser, before losing to Australian star Alex de Minaur.

In the 2019 season, the right-hander finished the year with a 35-14 win-loss record, which included titles at Yokohama and Seoul.

He captured his third challenger title at 2021 Biella-2, where he beat NextGen star and home favourite Lorenzo Musetti in the final.

That was also the year that Kwon registered the biggest win of his career when he ousted Frenchman and world number 24 Lucas Pouille in Zhuhai.

In 2020, the young star advanced to four straight ATP quarter-finals in four weeks, but he ran into the likes of Kyle Edmund, Reilly Opelka and Rafael Nadal, who all went on to become champions, in the tournaments at New York, Delray Beach and Acapulco. Kwon matched his biggest career win by beating Dusan Lajovic in Acapulco.

At the 2021 French Open, Kwon managed to overcome Kevin Anderson, a Wimbledon and US Open finalist, in the first round, en-route to the third round, before beating beaten by Matteo Berrettini.

Fresh after his exploits at Roland Garros, Kwon picked up his first win at Wimbledon, before losing a five-set thriller in the last-64 to German Dominik Koepfer.

In 2021, Kwon also managed to secure wins against the likes of Alexander Bublik, Marton Fucsovics and Holger Rune. He finished 2021 with a 19-15 win-loss record.

Soonwoo Kwon’s secret to tennis success could well be that he eats Kit Kat bars on court, which he claims he does to give him energy (ATP). He was spotted eating the chocolate bars during a match at the 2020 US Open.

He began playing tennis at the age of 10 and his father, Younghun, was a talented amateur tennis player. His family also consists of mother, Eunmi, sisters, Hakyung and Sookyung.

Despite wanting to be a football player until he started playing tennis, Kwon moved to Seoul at the age of 16, where he went to high school with fellow ATP player Duckhee Lee.

Kwon’s coach, Daniel Yoo, is a former ATP player who reached a career-high ranking of 326.
