After achieving a career-high ranking following the biggest title win in his career. The Frenchman has had a memorable 2021. Here we look at Ugo Humbert in more detail, including who his parents are.
The 23-year-old reached number 23 in the ATP Rankings after upsetting Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev en-route to the biggest of his three career titles, on the grass of Halle, in 2021.
Humbert won his first ATP Tour title at 2020 Auckland to become the youngest French champion since Richard Gasquet (21-years-old), at 2007 Mumbai, and the first Frenchman to lift the Auckland trophy in tournament history (ATP).
He saved four match points against Daniel Evans en-route to second ATP Tour title at 2020 Antwerp.
The talented left-hander owns a winning 5-4 record against the world’s top 10 and earned the biggest win of career over world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the 2020 Tokyo Olympics quarter-finals.
Humbert showed his big match pedigree by coming from two sets down to defeat compatriot Gael Monfils to reach the Wimbledon fourth round in 2019.
The Frenchman was involved in some memorable matches in 2021, the most notable being his Australian Open second round clash against home favourite Nick Kyrgios.
Humbert was two sets to one up against the Aussie, but Kyrgios came roaring back to win a five-set thriller.
He snapped a five-match losing streak heading into the grass tournament in Stuttgart, where he rebuilt some form and confidence by making it through to the quarter-finals.
But as well as ousting Rublev and Zverev in Halle, Humbert beat Felix Auger-Aliassime, Sebastian Korda and Sam Querrey, en-route to lifting the title.
But heading into Wimbledon in red-hot form and confidence soaring, Humbert was drawn against Kyrgios once again.
The pair played out a class once again, but unfortunately for Humbert history repeated itself, as from two sets to one down, the mercurial Aussie fought back to win 9-7 in the fifth and deciding set.
Who are Ugo Humbert’s parents?
Humbert began playing tennis at the age of five after watching his father play, he wanted to learn. His dad, Eric, and mother, Anne, own a butcher’s shop (ATP).
After leaving his home in Metz at the age of 12 to train in Paris, Humbert credits former coach Cedric Raynaud as being an important influence on his career.
Ugo is now coached by Nicolas Copin and Thierry Ascione, and he will be hoping to kick on in 2022 and probably won’t want to run into Kyrgios at another Grand Slam.
Although he has reached the fourth round of the All England Club, Humbert is yet to go beyond the second round at any of the other three Grand Slams, and is yet to win a match at the French Open.
There is cause for optimism, but room for improvement in Humbert’s camp. But he doesn’t look far away from a potential major breakthrough on the ATP Tour.
He is certainly one to watch heading into 2022.
