Emoni Bates’ parents; his dad Elgin was extremely influential
Emoni Bates was born to parents Elgin and Edith Bates in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on 8 January 2004.
His father, Elgin, is a basketball skill development trainer and former professional player. At the age of three, Bates practised basketball with his father by completing shooting drills and carrying out exercises to improve his mobility.
For his final year of high school, Bates announced he would attend a new prep school, Ypsi Prep Academy, which his father Elgin had opened.
“Coach [Tom] Izzo and Coach [Mike] Garland and that entire MSU staff has been showing love since his seventh-grade year. They’ve been very consistent,” Elgin Bates told ESPN.
“They really have a genuine care for him and the family. They care for him, not only as a player, but as a person. That’s really big for us as a family and for him as a player.”
