After announcing his recent 4.0 GPA, people wanted to know what JR Smith is studying at North Carolina A&T State University, and what his college major is.
The sports world was pretty shocked when two-time NBA champion JR Smith decided to go to college. Just before his 36th birthday, Smith announced he would be enrolling at the university, where he would also play for the college’s golf team.
Smith famously entered the 2004 NBA Draft straight out of high school instead of going to North Carolina, and was said to have been inspired to go back to school by NBA legend Ray Allen.

JR Smith celebrates 4.0 GPA in his first college semester
Smith recently completed his first semester at North Carolina A&T State University, and the former NBA star revealed he earned a 4.0 GPA.
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a way of measuring academic achievement in high schools. Essentially, the highest GPA you can earn is a 4.0, which indicates an A average in all of your classes.
Smith posted a video of his reaction to getting a perfect GPA, saying: “I can’t even describe the feeling, I ain’t even gonna lie to you. I ain’t gonna lie. A lot of hard work went into that you know.
“Monday through Friday eight to 11, sometimes longer, straight schoolwork. When you’re not used to going to school and doing all that, ahh man. Freshman year you don’t think you can do it, you always hear about your disabilities.”
What is JR Smith studying? College major revealed
Many people wondered what JR Smith is studying and what his college major is. The 16-year NBA vet is getting a degree in liberal studies, which according to one college “encompasses a wide range of subject areas, including literature, humanities, history, philosophy and science”. The college continues: “Liberal studies programmes provide students with the tools and skills to be critical and creative thinkers, researchers and communicators in almost any field.”
Smith has been pretty honest about his first semester, providing updates via Twitter. From what he has shared online it seems Smith has taken English classes and was also in a study group for an African-American Studies class.
It hasn’t all been plain sailing though, with Smith tweeting about his frustrations at being back in the classroom, staying up late to write papers, and the general challenges he has faced.
However, the hard work looks to have paid off as Smith recently celebrated his 4.0 GPA. Keep up the good work JR!
