Who is Tom Kurvers’ wife, Heather? People are wondering after the former NHL player and Minnesota Wild assistant general manager passed away on Monday from lung cancer, aged 58.

Who is Tom Kurvers?

Thomas Kurvers was an American professional ice hockey defenseman in the National Hockey League.

He spent 11 seasons in the NHL between 1984 and 1995. He won the 1984 Hobey Baker award as the best collegiate ice hockey player, and won the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986.

After his playing career, he was an executive for the Phoenix Coyotes, the Tampa Bay Lightning and then the Minnesota Wild.

In his NHL career, Kurvers appeared in 659 games. He scored 93 goals and added 328 assists for 421 points.

He also appeared in 57 Stanley Cup playoff games, scoring eight goals and recording 22 assists.

After his playing career he moved into management. Kurvers had served as Minnesota’s assistant general manager since 2018.

Why is he in the news?

On Monday, the team and University of Minnesota Duluth announced Kurvers had passed away aged just 58.

Minnesota Duluth athletics spokesman Brian Nystrom said they were informed of the sad news by Kurvers’ family.

The Wild said Kurvers had passed away at his home on Monday morning after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

“Tom’s passion for and success in hockey could only be surpassed by the love and optimism he shared with his family and friends each and every day,” the Wild said in a statement.

“Tom’s kindness and enthusiasm will be greatly missed by the countless number of people on whom he had a positive influence throughout his life.”

Who is his wife, Heather?

Tom is survived by his wife, Heather, and four children. The Minnesota Wild statement extended its “deepest sympathies and prayers to Tom’s family and loved ones”.

The statement said Tom leaves behind Heather and daughters, Madison and Rose, and sons, Weston and Roman. His daughters are from his first marriage.

Kurvers said Heather had looked after him since his diagnosis in 2019. “I’ve been looked after at home by my wife.

“Then at work, Bill (Guerin) has stepped up a couple of times just to say, ‘hey, you’re not doing this or this, and that’s an order,’” he told The Hockey Writers last March.

He told The Athletic in 2019 that Heather was also by his side when he had lung cancer diagnosed. “You can’t process it. I don’t even know what I said. I remember handing my phone to my wife. And she wrote some stuff down,” he said.
