Tim Sherwood suggested on Premier League Today that Ozan Kabak should get the nod over fellow new recruit Ben Davies for a place in Liverpool’s defence.
Both centre-backs were recruited by Jurgen Klopp on deadline day in a late attempt to plug any gaps left in his depleted squad.
Liverpool now have two more natural options and former Tottenham Hotspur manager Sherwood delivered his verdict on the shiny new signings.
“I think Kabak will be the one to play with Fabinho. He has more high-level experience. Davies is a very good player, but a good Championship player. It’s almost a different sport the Premier League and Championship,” Sherwood said.
“It depends how Kabak fits in and settles into English football. He’s an undersized player. He’s got a good leap, good pace. Very aggressive. Tries to win balls he probably shouldn’t, but he’ll learn along the way.”
Kabak joined from Schalke on a sixth-month deal with an option to buy. He spent two seasons with the struggling Bundesliga side who are currently bottom of the table.
Davies sealed his £1.6 million move having certified himself as a regular under Alex Neil at Preston North End.
Despite only arriving in the past 48 hours, one of them might be called upon for Liverpool’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion tonight.
Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have all been reduced to the treatment table.
This has forced Klopp to deploy Fabinho or Jordan Henderson out of position in central-defence alongside the inexperienced duo of Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Philips.
Tim Sherwood was eager to praise the performances of Philips after the 23-year-old stepped up for Liverpool’s past two fixtures.
“Over one and a half games, Philips has been outstanding. He came on at half time against Tottenham and was great. He played the other night as well. He hasn’t done himself any harm at the minute.”
Klopp has already confirmed that Fabinho may miss the visit of Brighton later today as he recovers from a minor issue.
He also stated in his pre-match conference on Liverpool’s YouTube channel that to pair Kabak and Davies together immediately ‘would not be cool.’
