When looking at the singing made by Chelsea this season, a lot of focus was placed on the exciting attacking talent that Frank Lampard brought to the club.

The likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech were all going to add an extra dimension to the team that it lacked last season. So far the trio have done well at Stamford Bridge.

However, they aren’t the best signing that Chelsea made this season. Neither are Ben Chilwell or Edouard Mendy. The best signing that Chelsea have made is Thiago Silva.

Turned the defence around

The veteran defender has helped turn Chelsea’s defence around. Before Silva made his debut, Chelsea had conceded three goals in two league games.

Silva’s debut was a bit concerning, as the Blues conceded three goals in a 3-3 draw with West Brom.

However, since then Silva has played another seven games, and in those fixtures Chelsea have conceded one goal. That is a total of four goals in eight games, whilst Siva has been on the park, a very good record.

Silva also scored his first goal for Frank Lampard’s side in their most recent game, a 4-1 win over Sheffield United.

Now, it is obvious that Silva won’t be at Chelsea for the long haul. After all, he is 36 years old, and his contract expires at the end of the season.

Contract should be extended

However, so good has Silva been in his brief time at Chelsea that Frank Lampard and the club’s hierarchy should already be looking to extend that contract another year.

That might sound like a bit of a gamble. However, Silva has been superb in this recent run of good form that Chelsea are on.

If they want to content for the title, keeping Silva fit will be key. That might mean resting the player for certain games, such as when Chelsea has clinched Champions League group stage qualification.

However, that is a risk worth taking, as long as Silva keeps turning in the excellent performances.

It is always a gamble when you sign players coming towards the end of their careers, but the purchase of Silva has been a master stroke by Chelsea.
