After roughly 10 years, Vincent Kompany is leaving Manchester City.
To mark the occasion, here are 10 of his greatest moments at the club.
1. Kompany joins City
2008 marked the year that Kompany joined City for £6 million. It may not seem like it belongs on this list, but the decision to take a gamble on the Belgian defender was the beginning of the whole saga.
2. MCFC Supporters’ Player of the Year
Kompany won yet another personal award, in the form of MCFC’s Supporters’ Player of the Year for 2010/11, putting him high on the list for ones to watch.
3. 2011 FA Cup semi-final
In May 2011, Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final. Despite Yaya Toure scoring the winning goal, Kompany’s performance at centre-back was undeniably a decisive factor in the win.
4. Kompany becomes captain
Kompany’s 100th Premier League game was made even sweeter because Kompany was no longer just a City player; he was captain of the team. He was first given the infamous captain’s armband in May 2011, which he wore in City’s match against Wigan Athletic in September of the same year. The result a 3-0 win for City.
5. City’s first league title
On 13th May 2012, Queens Park Rangers stood in the way of City’s first league title. It is important to remember that City had not won a league title since 1968. However, led by Kompany’s furiously fast feet, they secured a 3-2 victory.
6. Player of the Season
In 2012, Kompany was selected as Barclays’ ‘Player of the Season.’
7. 2013-14 Premier League title
Just two months later, Kompany scored yet again, both metaphorically and literally. City were the winners of the 2013–14 Premier League title, with Kompany scoring the second goal in City’s 2-0 win against West Ham United.
8. 2014 League Cup Final
In March 2014, Kompany captained his team to victory. City vanquished Sunderland 3-1 in the League Cup Final.
9. EFL Cup Final heroics
On February 25th 2018, he was the second goal scorer in City’s 3-0 triumph in the EFL Cup Final against Arsenal. Outdoing himself once again, Kompany was also named ‘Man of the Match’ for his performance in the EFL Cup Final.
10. Goal of the Season
Ending in style, Kompany won Nissan’s Goal of the Season in May 2019. What a goal it was.
As Vincent Kompany leaves to become Anderlecht head coach, City fans will be left with a bittersweet feeling. One thing is for certain: Kompany will not be forgotten in a hurry.
