It was in New York last year where the Dutchman came to prominence. As he continues his great form, we take a look at Botic van de Zandschulp’s coach and girlfriend.
The 26-year-old’s breakthrough happened at Flushing Meadows in 2021 when he became the third qualifier in US Open history to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The Dutch sensation beat Casper Ruud and Diego Schwartzman in New York before losing to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev
His performance in the Big Apple made him the only man to progress to the main draw of all four Grand Slams through qualifying in one year. Despite losing to Medvedev, he was the only man to take a set off the Russian throughout the entire tournament.
His 2022 has been impressive
He reached the third round at the 2022 Australian Open where he lost to World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev. As a result, he made his top 50 debut in the rankings on 31 January 2022. Van de Zandschulp then reached his maiden ATP Tour final at the Bavarian International Tennis Championships.
At Queen’s Club, he reached the first ATP 500 semifinal of his career and reached a career-high in the top 25 on 27 June 2022.
In the first round at Wimbledon he beat Feliciano López before following that up with a win over Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori. Botic then beat Richard Gasquet in four sets to set up a fourth round matchup with Rafael Nadal.
Who is Botic van de Zandschulp’s coach?
Botic van de Zandschulp’s coach is Peter Lucassen. The tennis player from Veenendaal broke through under the guidance of Lucassen last season and they continue to go from strength-to-strength.
Lucassen was previously employed by the tennis association KNLTB from where he supported van de Zandschulp.
Botic has faced Nadal once before in his career, and Peter thinks that will help him.
“It’s good to see Nadal has had some difficult matches here in London than in Paris, and it’s good that Botic has already played against him, he has that experience in his backpack,” Lucassen told Dutch newspaper AD Sport (via Tennis World USA).
Lucassen has previously coached American Ryan Harrison, who won his maiden ATP Tour singles title in Memphis (2017), reached the final in Atlanta (2017), and captured the doubles title at Roland Garros.
The Dutchman, who previously played professionally and reached a career-high ranking of 541, has also coached Ernesto Escobedo, Bjorn Fratangelo and Bradley Klahn.
