Ahead of her Round of 16 tie at this year’s Wimbledon championships, meet Heather Watson’s parents.
Heather Watson is into her first Grand Slam Round of 16 after overcoming Slovenian Kaja Juvan in the third round at Wimbledon. The former British No.1 beat Juvan 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 on Friday on Court One.
She followed that up by beating Natela Dzalamidze and Aleksandra Krunic with women’s doubles partner Harriet Dar to reach the women’s doubles last 16.
On Sunday, Watson faces German Jule Niemeier for a place in the singles quarter-finals.
The tennis star’s junior career
Heather Watson was born in Guernsey on 19 May 1992 and started playing tennis from the age of seven. At 12 years old she was already showing a flair for the sport and went to the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida.
In 2006, Watson won the British Under-14 Championship and followed that up but winning the British Under-16 Championships. She also won the gold medal at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games/
Heather really made a name for herself on the junior circuit in 2009 at the US Open. Heading into the tournament she was the 11th seed and ended up beating Daria Gavrilova to reach the final.
She faced doubles partner Yana Buchina and won in straight sets to capture her first junior major. She was joined in celebration by her mother.
Meet Heather Watson’s parents
Heather Watson’s parents are Michelle Watson and Ian Watson. Heather’s mother hails from Papua New Guinea, while her father Ian is British. Heather Watson’s ethnicity is mixed.
Ian Watson worked as a former managing director at Guernsey Electricity. He worked from 1995 until 2010 whenn retired – the year Heather turned pro.
Both parents have been incredibly supportive of Heather’s career. Michelle even left her job in 2008 to travel full-time with her daughter around the World Junior Circuit.
Now she can often be seen during the player’s box during her daughter’s matches. Heather has shared photos of her parents to social media before:
Heather Watson’s ex-boyfriends and relationships
Heather Watson’s ex boyfriend is fellow tennis player Lloyd Glasspool, whom she dated between 2016-2018. Glasspool has a career high doubles ranking of No. 52 (June 2022) and a career high singles ranking of No. 282 (July 2016).
In 2019 Heather started dating Morecambe footballer, Courtney Duffus. He is a former Republic of Ireland U21 international and who plays as a forward for EFL League Two club Stockport County on loan from Morecambe.
They reportedly split up in May 2022.
