If you didn’t know the name Mackenzie ‘Mackie’ McDonald before today, you most certainly will do now. The American shocked the tennis world on Wednesday (18 January) after beating defending champion Rafael Nadal at the 2023 Australian Open.
Nadal, who won the tournament last year, struggled with a hip injury throughout, and McDonald was able to capitalise, beating the Spaniard in straight sets, 6-4 6-4 7-5.

This was undoubtedly the biggest win of McDonald’s career, who beat compatriot Brandon Nakashima in five sets in the first round in Melbourne this week.
McDonald is no stranger to upsets though. The 27-year-old, who won the 2016 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships, beat Juan Martin del Potro at the 2019 Delray Beach Open – the first top 10 win of his career.
However, a hamstring injury ruled him out for the rest of the 2019 season, and struggled for form on his return in 2020. A year later, he regained form, making the fourth round at the Australian Open where he lost to Daniil Medvedev.
At the Citi Open in 2021, Mackenzie beat defending champion Nick Kyrgios in the first round before beating 2015 champion Kei Nishikori in the semis to reach his first ATP Final. He lost in the final to Jannik Sinner.
In 2022 he kicked on and cracked the world’s top 50 for the first time.
