Some Celtic supporters are gearing up for a title celebration today as nine-in-a-row looks set to become a reality.

According to the Daily Record, all 12 Premiership clubs started a meeting at 10am today. The only issue on the agenda was the decision to call the league. That looks set to go through – meaning Celtic will be awarded a ninth consecutive Premiership title.

The Hoops were 13 points clear of Rangers at the top of the league before football went into shutdown mode. With only nine games remaining, it would take a brave supporter to believe that Celtic were not going to march onto league glory in any case.

And with news of their success today imminent, their supporters have been flocking on social media to celebrate. Here’s a look at some of the reaction:

No such thing as a devalued title

When it comes to technicalities, Celtic’s rival supporters have a point. Sure, Neil Lennon’s side didn’t get over the line on the pitch. They were never given a chance to.

However, what they did do was put things beyond a reasonable doubt on the pitch. You have to take into account what would be the more unfair verdict – Celtic being crowned champions with a few games left to win, or not being crowned champions of a league that had been robbed from them.

Clubs will always vote for their own best interests. The reason there is such an overwhelming agreement to call the league likely comes from the financial incentives that will come about by doing so. Ensuring cash hits the bank in a time of a global pandemic is essential for Scottish clubs.

But that doesn’t mean Celtic’s title is devalued. The work was more or less done. The winning runs and the tough slogs had been fought. Lennon’s side came out the overwhelming winners over the course of a seven-and-a-half month fight.

Any fans who try to claim Celtic wouldn’t have won the league are kidding themselves. Those who try to use the technicality of it not having yet been won are either opportunistic or desperate – perhaps both.

But like it or not, today Celtic will surely be rubber-stamped as Premiership champions. Unfortunately, their supporters will have to celebrate it with a drink at home as opposed to gathering in pubs or outside Parkhead. Yet, at the end of the day, nine-in-a-row will always be nine-in-a-row – regardless of how you spin it.
