One of the only positives these Tottenham Hotspur fans took from the defeat against Manchester City was Japhet Tanganga’s performance.

Tanganga started over Matt Doherty in the right-back position against Man City.

This was the 21-year-old’s first outing in the Premier League this season, after recovering from a shoulder injury he picked up against Antwerp in December 2020.

The Englishman was an unused substitute against Everton in Spurs’ thrilling FA Cup tie, which they lost 5-4 after extra-time.

Tanganga – ready to battle Doherty

If Tanganga is to become a regular within Jose Mourinho’s squad, he’s going to have to push out at least Doherty from his position.

The Irishman has played 10 Premier League matches this season and started last time out against Everton.

The 29-year-old signed a four-year deal when joining Spurs in August 2020 from fellow Premier League side Wolves.

Doherty has managed to maintain an average Whoscored rating of 6.72/10 in the league so far this season.

Tanganga has never been a regular starter for Spurs, across two seasons the 21-year-old has played just 11 games in the Premier League and Europa League combined.

In these 11 outings, the English full-back has kept an average Whoscored rating of 6.84/10 – which is slightly better than Doherty.

In the match against City, the right-back kept an impressive passing accuracy of 84% and made two successful tackles.
