Manchester City have apparently made good progress with new contracts for two of their best players and are confident a third will follow.

Eurosport report that Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden are close to agreeing new deals at the Etihad Stadium.

And there is apparently optimism that Foden’s England international teammate Raheem Sterling will follow suit.

The report says that Sterling has proved tougher to negotiate with, having recently dispensed with his agent Aidy Ward.

The report claims that as well as landing a new striker – with Erling Haaland widely reported to be their top target – tying down their existing talent is their other top priority.

The summer transfer window looks like it will still be impacted by the pandemic.

That means it could well be about keeping your established talent as opposed to lavish spending on new players.

That’s even the case for someone with City’s financial muscle, although we’ll see how far they go in pursuit of Haaland.

De Bruyne is arguably the best player in the league and Foden is the future of the club.

Those two are critically important to City’s hopes going forward, in the same way Sterling is.

City will hope that those three are all tied down before the summer window opens.

By that stage, the trio are almost certain to have another Premier League title under their belt.
