Liverpool full-back Neco Williams is on the radar of Premier League rivals Southampton, according to The Athletic.

Williams has been a Red for more than a decade, having entered their youth system in 2009.

However, his first-team opportunities have been limited because of Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Williams has only started one Reds game in 2021 – the 1-0 loss to Fulham last month.

Aged just 19, Williams’ career is only just beginning and he has a bright future ahead of him.

However, a move away from Anfield may be beneficial for his development, which is exactly what Southampton are offering.

The South Coast side would be happy to take him Williams on loan initially but would like an option to buy.

They sniff the potential of a deal similar to the one that brought Kyle Walker-Peters to St Mary’s from Tottenham Hotspur last year.

Williams a wanted man

As per the Athletic, the Saints have shown an interest in the Wales international driven by Williams’ versatility.

Primarily a right-back for Liverpool, Williams featured at left-back for Wales during the latest round of World Cup qualifiers.

With Ryan Bertrand entering the final months of his contract, the Liverpool talent could be his long-term replacement.

Reds’ relationship with Saints

Southampton have a history of shipping players to the reigning Premier League champions.

Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Nathaniel Clyne have all set sail to join Liverpool.

Danny Ings and Takumi Minamino went in the opposite direction, as the link between the clubs burns strong.

Williams could be the next name on the lengthy list.

Walcott on the move

Southampton’s dealings on Merseyside don’t end with Liverpool either. The Athletic also states the Saints want to sign Theo Walcott permanently from Everton.

Walcott returned to St Mary’s on loan in October, 14 years after leaving the Saints for Arsenal.

His contract at Everton ends in June, shortly after his loan deal runs out at Southampton.

Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is keen to keep the experienced forward around for the 2021/22 campaign – and beyond.
