Despite the opening date of the transfer window being up in the air, Kopites around the world are biting their nails in anticipation, waiting to find out just how Michael Edwards will be spending the Nike money.

The latest bit of gossip will have mouths watering; Liverpool have once again been linked with a move for French prodigy Houssem Aouar.

RMC Sport in France have claimed that the Reds are ‘very interested’ in the youngster but there has been no direct contact with Olympique Lyonnais. The article also reports that the Ligue 1 side would consider a bid in the region of €50m.

The next Zidane

At 21-years-old Aouar has a lot of growing up to do in footballing terms, he isn’t even close to his peak and he is still finding out what type of player he can and will become.

There are some pointers as to his future though, the prodigy idolises the inimitable Zinedine Zidane (via Goal).

His choice of role model is evident in some elements of his play: Aouar is a fantastic dribbler and difficult to shrug off the ball, he also has an eye for a pass (as evidenced by his three assists in five games in the Champions League this season).

A cheap alternative?

Houssem Aouar isn’t the only young and dynamic central midfielder Jürgen Klopp has been linked with recently, with papers constantly reporting the gaffer’s interest in Kai Havertz – the crown prince of German football.

However, according to The Independent, Kai Havertz is valued at around £80m. With this in mind, Michael Edwards’ frugality may well keep his attention trained on France.

Not only is Havertz a much more costly option but the Reds would have to contend with Bayern Munich. In the grand scheme of things, all signs point towards Liverpool concentrating their energies on Houssem Aouar.
