Jurgen Klopp apparently wants to buy two talented young defenders in the summer window but the club’s finances mean he’ll only get one or the other.
Eurosport report that ideally, Klopp would buy Ozan Kabak and Ibrahima Konate.
But the clause in Kabak’s loan from Schalke means Liverpool need to pay £18 million to land him.
Konate’s RB Leipzig release clause is £34 million and the Reds cannot apparently afford that combined bill.
Liverpool could try and negotiate Kabak’s price down, of course.
Schalke are set for relegation into the second tier of German football, so they’d not be negotiating from a strong position.
But of course not using the clause and allowing Kabak onto the market may allow other clubs to swoop in.
As for Konate, his release clause should make a swoop straightforward if Liverpool pay the cash, but there’s no room for manoeuvre on the price.
Konate seems to be the more talented of the two defenders, with the brighter future.
But Kabak has had a chance to get used to life at Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp knows what he’s about now.
Konate would need to bed in but if Liverpool can only get one, this writer feels it should be the Frenchman.
