Billy Gilmour is set for his first Chelsea appearance of the season tonight in the Papa John’s Trophy.

According to the Athletic, Gilmour is in line to take another step on his return from injury against Bristol Rovers tonight.

Gilmour has been sidelined for four months with a knee injury but has represented Scotland’s Under 21 side against Croatia in recent days.

Now he’ll be hoping to get some minutes under his belt for the Under 23 side in a competitive match against senior opposition.

Gilmour’s breakthrough season was ended early by injury but he certainly made a big impression.

Cesc Fabregas was among those lauding the Scottish midfielder, calling him ‘fantastic’ in last season’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Liverpool.

Frank Lampard told Sky Sports in April how good Gilmour had been, and that same report quoted Roy Keane as having been impressed too.

The challenge for him now is to bounce back from that injury and deliver now there are expectations on his shoulders.

He has the talent to do exactly that, and with Scotland now qualified for the European Championship in the summer, he will have one eye on that squad.

The first thing he needs to do is get fit and a runout tonight would be a step in the right direction on that score.

Lampard has a lot of midfield options but showed last season he would give Gilmour the game if he performs.
