Chelsea have reportedly been given a boost in their hunt for Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell, as his asking price could now be reduced.
According to the Evening Standard, Leicester were looking to receive around £80million for the left-back amid interest for Frank Lampard’s side.
It is understood that the Foxes could now be forced to accept closer to the £50million valuation set out by Chelsea.
The report adds that Leicester are resigned to losing the highly-rated 23-year-old and that the individual has a desire to make the switch to Stamford Bridge for next season.
Chilwell has emerged as a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England team and has 11 senior international caps so far.
The left-back is a speed machine that is great getting forward and has Premier League experience under his belt, but would still cost a sizeable fee and the defensive side of his game needs improving.
Chelsea legend Ashley Cole is regarded as one of the world’s best left-backs in the past couple of decades and he previously raved about Chilwell back in December 2019.
“I would love to see him at Chelsea. He’s doing really, really well at Leicester,” Cole told talkSPORT.
“He’s enjoying the way Brendan plays and his system; he’s got that licence to attack. I think he’s quality and I’ve heard he’s a Chelsea fan, too, so I would like to see him here.”
With Cole giving his approval of the full-back, it will be intriguing to see if Chelsea can get a deal for him over the line and have at least been given some positive news regarding his price tag.
