Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has delivered an update on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s return to full fitness.

Klopp spoke at his press conference ahead of the game against West Brom about the England international midfielder.

Chamberlain is yet to start a game this season and made his first appearance of 2020/21 against Crystal Palace off the bench last Saturday.

Klopp said Chamberlain took part in an intense training session today and asked the fitness coaches if he could stay out and do more work.

“Tottenham, when we didn’t make a substitution because (the substitutes) were all without rhythm and the game was really intense,” said Klopp about a game where Chamberlain was on the bench

“The last game we could make subs which helped and they are all now – especially Ox – a step further.

“He trained today {inhales}, had a really good session. It was intense and he asked the fitness coaches if he can do a little bit more.

“There’s still something to come and I’m looking forward to it.”

Liverpool have got themselves in the position to be top at Christmas without Oxlade-Chamberlain so he’ll almost be like a January signing now.

He’ll be hoping for an injury-free 2021 which could see him named in the England squad for the European Championship in the summer.

With the games mounting up over Christmas, Chamberlain should get more and more chances to impress.

He will be managed carefully, of course, but it sounds like he’s impressing in training and keen to do as much as he can to get fitter and fitter.
