Rangers star Ianis Hagi has been dropped from the Romania national team and will play for the country’s under-21 side under boss Adrian Mutu instead.
As reported by the Daily Record, Mutu explained the decision was made because of Hagi’s “lack of confidence” after limited game time at club level.
The senior squad play Belarus, Norway and Northern Ireland during the next two weeks. However, Hagi will instead play for Romania’s Under-21 squad in their meeting with Denmark.
The attacker was a regular under Steven Gerrard at the beginning of the campaign. But he now finds himself out of favour at Ibrox, playing just 21 minutes in the club’s last three matches.
Former Chelsea striker Mutu is well aware of Hagi’s abilities. However, he said time away from the senior squad would be hugely beneficial for all.
“Ianis’ confidence has been affected and he has not been starting so much for Rangers in the past few weeks either,” said Mutu.
“I will speak to him. And I am sure playing for the 21s again will give his confidence a big boost.
“I know exactly what Ianis is capable of. For me to have him in my squad is a good thing. He will be able to help the rest of the players enormously.”

Established at senior level
The 22-year-old already boasts 14 caps at international level. He made his debut in a Nations League win over Lithuania in 2018.
But his most notable displays for his country have come within the junior ranks. In the 2019 Under-21 European Championships, Hagi netted against England and Croatia to help his side top their group.
Exceptional start for Rangers
Despite his apparent shunning, Hagi has one goal and eight assists for Rangers in all competitions this season. His performances on the right flank have played a part in the club’s stunning start domestically and in Europe.
Gerrard’s men have 12 wins and two draws from their 14 league matches. They also remain unbeaten in their Europa League group, with two wins and a draw.
