Paul Merson has compared Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish to an England football legend – Paul Gascoigne – Sky Sports reports.

Grealish has started the season in great form, and that’s what has prompted Merson to make the case for Villa’s star midfielder.

‘Most talented’

“In terms of talent, I said it a long time ago. I think he is the most talented English player we have got. He is the nearest thing to Paul Gascoigne we have had,” Merson said.

That’s high praise indeed from Merson. Gascoigne has to go down as one of the most talented English footballers of his generation.

Can Grealish be as good as Gascoigne? That remains to be seen. As much as Aston Villa fans might not want to hear it, it could depend on the player moving to a ‘bigger’ club.

Had Villa been relegated last season Grealish would have left for sure. They stayed up, though, and he has been at the forefront of their excellent start to the season. At this rate he won’t need to switch clubs to play in Europe.

Keep his feet on the ground

For the moment, though, Grealish should be keeping his feet on the ground. Dean Smith is the ideal manager who can do just that.

It is interesting Grealish hasn’t been able to make a regular breakthrough into the England team just yet.

He has played two games for England, which is a bit of a surprise when you consider how well he has been playing for Aston Villa on a regular basis.

That could encourage Grealish to up his levels of performance even more. You have to imagine Grealish will feature for England in the upcoming international games. However, there must be a doubt about him starting. Only time will tell on that front.

Back to the main point of the article, the Gascoigne/Grealish comparison.

If Grealish can avoid the kind of injuries Gascoigne had, he could become just as successful as the former England great.
