Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson is one of Britain’s greatest and most recognisable Paralympic athletes.
During the course of her 16-year career, Tanni, who has spina bifida and is a wheelchair user, competed in five Paralympic Games.
She won 11 gold medals, four silvers and a bronze, mostly in track events.
She also has 13 World Championship medals (six gold, five silver and two bronze).
In 2005 she became ‘Dame’ Tanni Grey-Thompson for her services to sport, following an MBE in 1993 and an OBE in 2000.
In March 2010, Tanni was created a life peer and was conferred as Baroness Grey-Thompson, of Eaglescliffe in the County of Durham.
She is a patron of numerous charities and foundations and was part of Channel 4’s commentary team at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Who is Tanni Grey-Thompson’s husband?
Tanni Grey-Thompson’s husband is Ian Thompson, a research chemist and former wheelchair athlete himself.
Tanni and Ian met in 1987 as members of the national wheelchair racing squad. They married on 1 May 1999 at St John’s Church, Cardiff.
A biography on the couple states Dr Ian Thompson has a PhD in chemistry, which he uses to develop green, high-performance engine oil.
The couple live in a modern, five-bedroom home in Eaglescliffe. It is a few miles down the road from Middlesborough on the north east coast.
Ian has spent a lot of time helping Tanni with her training and looking after their daughter, Carys.
Tanni Grey-Thompson’s children
Tanni Grey-Thompson and husband Ian have one daughter, Carys, who was born in February 2002.
She was at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games to watch her mum Baroness Tanni win two gold medals.
She is said to be involved in sport and a lover of gymnastics.
