Ahead of the NCAA Division I women’s basketball championship on Sunday, we take a look at UConn star Paige Bueckers’ parents and family.
The women’s NCAA championship game takes place tonight with top overall seed South Carolina taking annual favorite Connecticut. UConn have already gone one better than last year, when they reached the Final Four, and Paige Bueckers, the youngest player to earn the women’s Naismith Trophy, will no doubt be instrumental if they’re to clinch a national title.
Who are Paige Bueckers’ parents? Meet her father, Bob
The 5ft 11in point guard joined UConn as the number one player in her class, and since her time at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota, she has been ranked as a generational player.
Paige Bueckers’ parents, Amy Dettbarn and Bob Bueckers, have been hugely supportive of the precocious young talent. Amy and Bob divorced when Paige was three, and Paige’s father stayed in Minnesota with her, while her mom remarried and moved to Billings, Montana.
Bob was a star point guard during his high school days and was a big influence on Paige when she was growing up. He told The Athletic: “She literally puts in a ton of time in the gym, working by herself, watching film, watching other players to see what she can incorporate into her game and just the general progression of each year adding something you might not be so good at.”
Speaking about her game he told Star Tribune: “She’s always played with a little flair. She knows it’s entertainment, and she wants people to enjoy watching her.”
More on Paige Bueckers’ mom, Amy Dettbarn
Paige Bueckers’ mom is Amy Dettbarn, who she is very close with despite Amy relocating to Montana. Like Bob, Amy also comes from a sporting background and participated in track and field, cross country, and even basketball, when she was younger.
Along with her grandparents (more on them in a minute) Paige and Amy give back through her Buckets with Bueckers clinic. The clinic helps young children develop an interest in basketball while teaching them the fundamentals of the game.
Bueckers had a special moment with her grandmother
Bueckers’ grandparents are Joann and Steve Dettbarn, who often show up to support Paige during her games. Grandmother Joann surprised Paige after UConn’s Elite Eight 91-87 win over NC State, much to the point guard’s surprise.
“I am so proud of how she overcame so much this year, but I’m equally as proud of all of them,” Dettbarn said after the game (per CT Insider).
Speaking ahead of the Final Four game against Stanford Joann said: “We’ve already got tickets. We’ve already got hotel rooms. I think it’s going to be amazing because there’s going to be a lot of Minnesota people there cheering for her and go UConn. Let’s bring it all home.”
No doubt Joann and Paige’s family will be in attendance for the title game tonight, which takes place at 8 pm ET from the Target Center arena in Minneapolis.
