Nick Diaz is all set to face Robbie Lawler at UFC 266 this weekend but the 38-year-old has now claimed that he should’ve been fighting Kamaru Usman instead.
Diaz has been away from the octagon for over six years. Most fans were convinced that he wasn’t coming back, but he’s here now and is set to roll back the years by taking on the man he beat over 17 years ago.
However, Diaz feels there’s absolutely no need for this rematch. He believes that he should be fighting UFC Welterweight Champion Usman and has boldly claimed that he would beat him up.
Nick Diaz: I should be fighting Kamaru Usman
He told in an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto: “I’m going in there (UFC 266) to win. Do I feel confident? I never do, I never have, I always feel like I’m going to get trashed out there. Every fight I’ve ever done. ‘How do you feel against Robbie Lawler?’ I feel like I’m going to get the s**t beat out of me. And even when I win, I get beat up worse.”
“I think I’ll beat the s**t out of Usman. I’ll have a better shot against Usman than I do Lawler, just because I already beat Lawler. This doesn’t make sense for me to go in and fight Robbie Lawler again.
“I don’t know why I’m doing this. This should not happen. Whoever set this up is an idiot. I don’t know why I’m doing this, I don’t know why this happened. I should be fighting Kamaru Usman — and that’s it.
Diaz vs Usman in the future?
There was no chance for Diaz to walk back after over six years and get an instant title shot. There’s just no way anybody could’ve justified that, but that doesn’t mean he can’t face Usman in the future.
If Diaz does to Lawler what he did in their first fight all the way back in UFC 47, he could become a contender for Usman’s belt, if the champ defends his title against Colby Covington later this year.
As for Diaz’s chances against Usman, we can’t imagine he’ll get the better of the champion. However, you can never underestimate the Diaz brothers, even though Nick is 38 years old right now.
