Legendary NFL coach and sportscaster John Madden has passed away at age 85, so fans now reflecting on his career are now wondering: why did he retire from broadcasting?

The football community has been mourning the death of iconic Raiders coach John Madden after news broke out that he passed away unexpectedly at age 85 on Tuesday (28 December 2021).

The cause of death has not been mentioned.

Sports news outlets and athletes have been sending their condolences to the Madden family, remembering the coach as “the greatest broadcaster ever” and “an American original” – there truly is a hole in their hearts.

Madden is known for his outstanding achievement of winning 76% of games as Oakland Raiders’ coach, as well as taking home a record 16 Sports Emmy Awards for colour commentating for NFL telecasts. If not, you’ve probably seen his name plastered on EA’s series, Madden NFL Football.

Why did John Madden retire from broadcasting?

Madden retired from broacasting on 16 April 2009, citing age and desire to spend more time with his family as the reason behind the announcement.

After a three decade career of calling games for ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, the then 73-year-old called it quits but still expressed his passion for the job:

“I still love every part of it – the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people… but I know this is the right time,” reported Forbes.

After leading the Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory in 1977, Madden retired two years later from coaching due to his deteriorating ulcer condition and proceeded to join CBS.

He remained there until 1993 and began working for Fox when they gained the rights to NFC games. He left the network in 2002 to become the lead analyst for Monday Night Football under four-year contract reportedly worth $5 million.

The sports personality ended his broacasting career with a three year stint at NBC, providing colour commentary for Sunday night games. This meant that he became the first sportscaster to work for all the ‘big four’ US networks.

What is John Madden’s net worth?

With back-to-back contracts worth millions of dollars starting from 1979, Madden has a net worth of $200 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

It wasn’t even his broadcasting career that majorly contributed to his financial success, it was the endorsement of EA’s Madden NFL.

The game has sold more than 130 million copies to date, earning him a reported $150 million.
