Texans fires its head coach after just one season

Per multiple reports, the Houston Texans have fired head coach David Culley after just one season in charge. “I came to this difficult but necessary decision after reviewing our football operation,” Texans general manager Nick Caserio said.

“I loved every minute of being the head coach of the Houston Texans, I appreciate the players and coaches for staying the course with me through the ups and downs of our season,” Culley said in a statement. “I’m disappointed we didn’t win more games and I won’t have a chance to improve on the lessons I’ve learned, but I fully understand this is a bottom-line business and I didn’t do enough.”

What is David Culley’s ethnicity?

David Culley was one of two Black head coaches left in the NFL after the Dolphins recently fired Brian Flores. David Culley’s ethnicity is African-American, and after his dismissal, Pittsburgh Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin stands as the NFL’s only black coach.

Culley played a number of sports growing up including basketball and baseball, and was a football quarterback at White County High School. He was the first African-American to play quarterback at Vanderbilt, and was the first African-American to do so in school history.

“I didn’t realize I was Black until I left Sparta for Vanderbilt in 1972 and played quarterback in the SEC,” he said.

Who are David Culley’s parents?

The former Texans coach was born and raised in the Tennessee town of Sparta, and David Culley’s parents are father Ulysses Grant Culley Sr, and mother Jessie Mae. The couple brought up six children, including four boys.

Sadly, both of David Culley’s parents are deceased, with his 94-year-old father, Ulysses (who was named after the president of the same name) passing on 1 May 2021.

“Just about everybody knew him, and they called him Culley,” David Culley said of his father. “Some on my mother’s side called him Snook because he loved to shoot pool and play snooker. He was good at it, too. He’d take their money, and they’d say he snookered them.”

Ulysses, who served in the Army in World War II, worked at Caney Fork Electric Company and a local supermarket during his life, and was a much loved member of the White County community. The White County High School baseball field was even named after him as he was a well-known lover of baseball.

Throughout David’s coaching career in the NFL, he would often call his father after games for his advice. “I learned so much from my dad,” he told the Houston Chronicle.

His mom Jessie Mae died in 2015

David Culley’s mom, Jessie Mae, died in 2015 aged 82. According to Davis, she played slow-pitch softball until she was 65.

“The way she drove, she should have been on the NASCAR circuit. Everybody in Sparta knew when Jessie Mae was coming through town,” he said.

“My mom and dad were my heroes,” David told the Houston Chronicle, “and their presence will always be with me.”
