USC head coach Clay Helton has been fired, with Donte Williams taking over as interim head coach for the foreseeable. In light of the sacking, NFL fans are all making the same Urban Meyer to USC joke, especially as life in Jacksonville got off to the worst possible start.
USC fires head coach Clay Helton
USC head coach Clay Helton has been fired after just two games into the 2021 season.
The decision was made following the Trojans’ home loss to Stanford on Saturday night.
They trailed 42-13 at halfway and eventually lost 42-28.
This was his seventh season leading the USC program. Helton was 46-24 at USC, including a Las Vegas Bowl win as interim coach following the 2013 season.
Donte Williams, the team’s cornerbacks coach, has been named the interim head coach.
“This season is just getting started and we have the opportunity to really do something special with this team and this program. I’m confident that as our interim head coach Donte Williams gives us a higher probability for success the remainder of the season,” USC athletic director Mike Bohn said.
Fans make same joke about Urban Meyer joining USC
The Urban Meyer era in Jacksonville got off to the worst possible start in Week 1.
The Jaguars lost to the consensus worst team in football, the Houston Texans, and looked toothless in the process (more on that in a minute).
The former Florida and Ohio State head coach has made a name for himself in college football.
After Helton’s dismissal, though, Urban Meyer to USC has become a running joke on social media.
Meyer has rough start to life in the NFL
The first-year head coach and his rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence got off to the worst possible start in Week 1.
Urban Meyer’s ability to adapt to the NFL game from college has been a contentious issue in NFL circles, and the Jags loss to the Texans did nothing to alleviate concerns.
“I don’t really know that word [shell-shocked] other than we’ve all got our a– kicked before,” Meyer said after the game, via ESPN.
According to CBS Sports, there has been a number of red flags this offseason, and Meyer already has “repeated issues” in Jacksonville.
They report: ‘Meyer’s temper and lack of familiarity with the ebbs and flows of the NFL calendar [is] rubbing the Jacksonville Jaguars staff and players the wrong way.’
They continue: ‘There is a disconnect at times between the members of the staff with extensive pro experience and those who lack it, and morale has suffered as the outbursts have continued.
‘His fiery remarks to players and coaches after games have already struck many as bizarre.’
Of course, it’s unlikely Meyer would bail on the Jags after one game, but stranger things have happened.
