Sean Payton announced that he’s stepping down from his post as New Orleans Saints coach on Tuesday, 25 January 2022 after 16 years, so now his relationship with his wife Skylene and their age gap is the latest trending conversation.

After 15 seasons with the New Orleans Saints, Payton announced his decision to step away, though he has emphasised that “retirement is not the right word”.

The former quarter-back mentioned that coaching is “not where my heart is right now”, so it’s highly unlikely that he will take on another team in 2022.

As per WBRZ, Payton has no immediate plans for the future and his leave doesn’t mean that he’s stepping away from the sport forever: “I don’t know what’s next. I don’t like the word retirement… I still have a vision for doing things in football,” he said. “And I’ll be honest with you, that might be coaching again at some point. I don’t think it’s this year, maybe in the future. But that’s not where my heart is right now.”

With more free time, it’s likely that he’ll be spending it with his family and wife Skylene, so here’s what we know about her.

Sean Payton and wife Skylene’s age difference explored

Payton was born 29 December 1963 in San Mateo, California, which makes him 58-years-old.

37-year-old Skylene Montgomery was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia on 4 December 1984, which gives the couple a 21-year age gap.

Payton and Montgomery married in June 2021 in Cabo San Lucas after the pair got engaged at a surprise proposal at Longway Tavern, New Orleans in November 2019.

Mrs Payton was born to Skylar and Darlene Montgomery, meaning that her name is a combination of her parents. She grew up as a self-described tomboy, but when she hit ninth grade, she entered Miss Teen West Virginia – her first beauty pageant.

The then 14-year-old placed second and continued her pageant career whilst studying exercising physiology at Mashall University. In 2008, she was crowned Miss West Virginia USA and then gained a degree in nursing from West Virginia University.

Montgomery relocated to New Orleans to work in the gastrointestinal intensive care unit at Ochsner Medical Center, according to Nola; she’s currently studying to become a nurse practitioner.

The pair met at a Saints-Panthers game when Montgomery asked a friend for tickets, but they gave her Payton’s phone number instead.

Sean Payton’s first wife

Montgomery is Payton’s second marriage – he was previously married to Beth Shuey from 1992 – 2014, with who he shares children Meghan (born 1997) and Connor Payton (born 2000).

The former couple filed for divorce in 2012 after nearly 20 years of marriage.

They reportedly met during the early 1990s at Indiana State University. Payton met Shuey while he was coaching at the university, and they began dating soon after.
