NFL Veterans’ Day Gear 2020 revealed: This Wednesday, 11 November, in the US, the NFL will mark Veterans’ Day by selling exclusive merchandise to honour military veterans and their families.
What is Veterans’ Day?
Veterans Day is on 11 November in the US. It was known as Armistice Day until 1954. The name was officially changed by then US president Dwight D Eisenhower.
The event is still referred to as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in the UK and other parts of the world. The first anniversary took place in 1919.
In the US, the day is a federal holiday that commemorates the end of the First World War in November 1918. It honours all US veterans and victims of subsequent wars around the world.
How does the NFL celebrate Veterans’ Day?
Every year, the NFL produces exclusive merchandise in a range called Salute To Service.
As quoted by the official NFL website: “Salute To Service is a year-round effort to honour, empower and connect our nation’s service members, veterans and their families.
“It is grounded in deep partnership with non-profits and organisations that support the military community in the United States and across the world.
“The NFL extends its appreciation of the military community through special moments of recognition at games and events and visits to military bases, both domestically and internationally, throughout the year.”
The official NFL store states all net proceeds from Salute To Service merchandise go towards honouring American armed forces.
The NFL donated almost $800,000 to military non-profit partners last year and more than $44 million overall since 2011.

The range includes a variety of clothing usually featuring a camouflaged design, baring the star-spangled banner and the Salute To Service logo.
Items range from long-sleeved T-shirts, hoodies, caps, buttoned jackets, beanie hats and gilets.
All 32 NFL franchises also offer their own Salute To Service replica jersey, which incorporates the shield, flag and camouflage design.
As 11 November falls on a Wednesday this year, there will be no match to celebrate the occasion on the day. However, Thursday night’s fixture between the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts will feature tributes to veterans and military personnel.
