Super Wild Card Weekend is here in the NFL as the Raiders take on the Bengals. During the game, people wanted to know what Derek Carr’s religion is and whether he’s Christian.

Derek Carr has helped the Raiders to their first playoff berth since 2016, and their second since they lost Super Bowl XXXVII following the 2002 season. The Raiders take on the Bengals on Saturday 15 January at 4:30 pm ET on NBC.

The quarterback will no doubt play a big part if the Raiders are to win, so let’s explore Derek Carr’s religion and devotion to Christianity in more details.

What is Derek Carr’s religion?

Derek Carr is a devout Christian who reportedly became serious about religion after being a major party animal at college. After receiving a letter from his future wife Heather telling him “you’re not the man I thought you were”, Carr reformed his ways.

He began living a life in search of a higher power. “You can be on the right path, but still realise something is missing,” Carr said.

His devotion to Christianity explored

Carr’s faith was strengthened when he and his wife had to contend with a life-threatening illness to their newborn child, Dallas. Their eldest son was born with a medical condition that tied up his intestines and required three surgeries to correct.

Through this process, Carr cites his Christian faith as his anchor and the most important thing in his life. On how his faith got him and wife through the multiple surgeries, he said: “Before he went into surgery they wheeled him out, we all grabbed hands and I prayed over him.

“I prayed for his strength and I praised God that we had even one day to spend with him. If you only knew, I would go into the bathroom and cry my eyes out. You can be a real Christian but be dying inside, you know, because we’re human.”

Carr became increasingly active in the church, speaking at various groups and reading the Bible. He also became active as a preacher at Brave Church in San Ramon.

“I believe God has given me talents and abilities to be my very best and work harder than anybody else,” Carr said. “I feel like I’m doing it for a higher purpose than just money, a higher purpose than fame.”

Derek Carr has tattoos on his wrists marking his faith. On his left wrist he has a verse from the Biblical Book of Jeremiah.

On his right wrist he has a depiction of Chi Rho, one of the earliest symbols used by Christians. It invokes the crucifixion of Jesus as well as symbolising his status as Christ.

Carr’s wife and children

Derek Carr’s wife is Heather Neel, who he met while she was working as a waitress at BJ’s Brewhouse in Fresno. The couple tied the knot in 2012 and have four children.

They have three sons – Dallas Carr, Deker Luke Carr and Deakon Carr – while the couple welcomed a daughter, Brooklyn Mae, in 2020.
