The NFL announced today that four teams will carry an additional international player on their practice squads in 2021 as part of the International Player Pathway program.
Instituted in 2017, the program aims to provide elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster.
One of these players is Mexican offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez. Here’s everything you need to know about him.

NFL International Player Pathway program explained
Four teams will carry an additional international player on their practice squads in 2021.
These teams are as follows:
- Aaron Donkor, LB, Germany, Seattle Seahawks
- Alfredo Gutierrez, OL, Mexico, San Francisco 49ers
- Max Pircher, OL, Italy, Los Angeles Rams
- Bernhard Seikovits, TE, Austria, Arizona Cardinals
The four NFC West clubs will carry these players on their roster until the end of training camp.
At that time, the players are eligible for an international player practice squad exemption, granting the team an extra practice squad member that is ineligible to be activated during the 2021 season.
“The International Player Pathway Program provides athletes with a viable route to the NFL and an opportunity to further develop their skills,” said Damani Leech, NFL chief operating officer of international.
“We are excited to welcome the 2021 class to the NFL and continue growing the game globally.”

Alfredo Gutierreze was born in Tijuana and is 24 years old.
He grew up playing youth football in Mexico before moving to the US.
On graduating high school, Gutierrez enrolled in junior college before returning home to Mexico and joining Tecnológico de Monterrey on a full athletic scholarship. While there, he won a National Championship in 2019.
Alfredo Gutierrez was then selected in the sixth round of the LFA Draft by the Monterrey Fundidores for the 2021 season.
However, he was subsequently invited to participate in the International Player Pathway Program, where with other players from different parts of the world, he will try to earn a place in the NFL.
He will now join the San Francisco 49ers on their 2021 practice roster.

On 31 March, Alfredo Gutierrez held his Pro Day at the University of Florida facilities where he showcased his abilities.
The official marks of the Mexican were: height 2.08m and weight 150.5kg.
He also registered a vertical jump of 68.58cm, had a static long jump of 2.46m, and reached 20 repetitions of a bench press with a weight of 225lb (102 kg).
He also ran the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds.
If signed, Gutierrez would be the second Mexican in the NFL after former Tecnológico de Monterrey teammate Isaac Alarcón signed a reserve/future contract with the Dallas Cowboys on 4 January 2021.
