Milwaukee Bucks shooting guard Wesley Matthews has rejected a new contract and could move to the LA Lakers in the coming days, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

The 34-year-old reportedly declined his $2.7m player option for the 2020/21 season and is now a free agent.

Matthews has spent the majority of his career in the Western Conference. He enjoyed successful stints at Portland Trail Blazers and the Dallas Mavericks, having started out at Utah Jazz.

The Texas-born player was a loyal servant to the Trail Blazers and Mavericks. He spent five and four years respectively with each franchise.

He then had an extremely busy 2019. He signed with the New York Knicks in January only to join the Indiana Pacers a month later.

Matthews was then snapped up by his current side Milwaukee in July. However, his time there looks set to come to an abrupt end.

Busy off-season under way

Matthews certainly isn’t the first major player to turn to free agency ahead of the upcoming season.

Houston Rockets star James Harden has also turned down the opportunity to stay on with his current club. He’s reportedly seeking a move to the Brooklyn Nets.

The condensed off-season schedule looks set to burst into life on Monday when the transaction window opens. The 2020 Draft takes place two days later.

Crucial period for Lakers

The Lakers are already off to a head start this year. They have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Dennis Schroder from Oklahoma City Thunder.

The 27-year-old German looks set to arrive in LA, with Lakers sending Danny Green in the other direction.

Losing Green creates a problem for the franchise, one they hope to resolve with the acquisition of Matthews.

The defending champions were also interested in San Antonio Spurs veteran DeMar DeRozan. However, he has since opted-in for another season with the Spurs.
