Obi Toppin’s mom was brought to tears last season

During a game against the Atlanta Hawks at Madison Square Garden last season, then-Knicks rookie Obi Toppin slammed an alley-oop.

The chants of “O-bi, O-bi, O-bi’’ rang through the iconic arena and in the stands Obi Toppin’s mom could be seen watching proudly on.

It was a sweet moment as she could be seen weeping at her son’s efforts.

More on Roni Toppin

According to the New York Post, Roni Toppin, Obi Toppin’s mother, has been to almost every single game and travelled on the road.

On Christmas Day last year, before fans were allowed inside the Garden, Roni told the outlet she’d get a job as a janitor to see her son play live at the Garden.

The New York Post also reports Roni Toppin teaches students with autism at a Washington Heights middle school.

Roni still lives in Ossining, where Obi attended high school. Obi Toppin was raised in Brooklyn before they moved briefly to Melbourne, Fla.

The Post adds she is 5ft 10in and is a former volleyball player, even coaching one of Obi’s youth basketball teams.

Who is Obi Toppin’s dad, ‘Dunkers Delight’?

Not only is Roni Toppin a basketball aficionado, Obi Toppin’s dad, Obadiah Toppin Sr, played overseas as a former Rucker Park legend (a famous court in Brooklyn).

Obadiah played collegiate ball at Globe Institute of Technology and professionally for the Brooklyn Kings.

Moreover, his father was known as “Dunkers Delight” while playing for a streetball group called the Court Kingz.

The NY Post says Obadiah participated in the old And1 Streetball tour and was once part of a 2006 Gatorade commercial with Vince Carter, Dwyane Wade, and Ben Wallace.

Toppin told the publication: “I talked to him about some of the dunks. He’s basically telling me which ones will look crazy for that time.”

Toppin also told them his father is his No. 1 inspiration in the dunk department.

“I grew up watching him,” Toppin said. “Every team he played on he was – his name was Dunkers Delight, so that speaks for itself.”
