The Lakers big man missed a preseason game against the Suns with “lower back soreness”. Afterwards, NBA fans were calling Anthony Davis (AD) Always Damaged.

Anthony Davis missed 42 games last season due to injury – a significant reason why the Lakers ended up missing the playoffs.

When healthy, the eight-time All-Star is among the game’s best. He was instrumental during their title run in 2020 in the Orlando Bubble.

The 29-year-old is heading into Year 4 with the Lakers, and it’s a big one. A near 38-year-old LeBron can’t go on forever and for the Lakers to stay relevant in the short-medium term, Davis is going to have to take over the mantle and become the Lakers’ no.1 option he’s meant to be.

Fans coin new nickname for Anthony Davis – ‘Always Damaged’

The NBA preseason is in full swing and AD recently suited up in the Purple & Gold against the Sacramento Kings. The former Pelican played 16 minutes and registered a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. He also had two assists and one steal in the 105-75 loss.

On Wednesday 5 October, Davis was set to play against the Suns. However, just before tip-off, it was announced Davis was out due to “lower back tightness”.

According to Lakers reporter Mike Trundell, it was “precautionary” as the team didn’t “want to push it for a preseason game.”

However, Davis missing yet another game through injury provided fans with an all too familiar sense of ‘here we go again.’

In the wake of the news, fans coined a rather brutal nickname for Anthony Davis (AD) – ‘Always Damaged’ – in reference to his initials and his injury record:

It’s not the first unfortunate nickname he’s been given over the years

In February this year, AD suffered an ankle sprain against the Utah Jazz which saw him leave the arena on crutches. Afterwards, ‘Street Clothes’ trended on social media, a nickname given to Davis by Inside the NBA host Charles Barkley.

He has referred to AD as Street Clothes for a while now, once saying: “Let me tell y’all something. This Lakers team, I’ve looked at this Lakers team, it’s gonna come down to one thing – Street Clothes (Anthony Davis).”

Barkley went on: “If Anthony Davis spends more time in street clothes than he do in being one of the five best basketball players in the world, all the pieces they bought around him aren’t gonna matter.”

Davis has also been called ‘ADisney’ in the past. In May 2021, the Lakers lost a Game 1 against the Phoenix Suns 99-90.

Davis had the most minutes out of any Laker, but only managed 13 points after going 5-for-16 on field goals, while opposing big man Deandre Ayton had 21 points.

Fans labelled him as ‘ADisney’, referring to the Lakers’ title run in the Orlando Bubble in 2020.

The meme implied that AD is only able to turn it on when he’s in Disneyland.

However, the latest injury is not expected to keep Davis out of the lineup for an extended period of time.

Davis recently told Yahoo Sports! that he had “goosebumps thinking about this year”. He added, “I’m looking forward to a healthy year and doing what I know we can do”.

The Lakers will be hoping AD isn’t ‘Always Damaged’ and he can-stay injury free. Their success hinges on his health.
