Here we take a look at Lauri Markkanen’s wife Verna Aho, his parents, and children as the Jazz star continues to stake an All-Star claim.
The Utah Jazz are undoubtedly the surprise package this season, remarkably sitting atop the Western Conference as things stand.
Few anticipated the 12-7 Jazz would be contenders this year, having traded away Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert this offseason. Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, who was acquired as part of the Mitchell trade, has been a large factor in their success.
The Finnish star is averaging 22.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, shooting 54.4% from the field and nearly 82% from the foul line. He is one of the frontrunners for the Most Improved Player award and could well receive his first All-Star berth.
He is from a family of basketball players and athletes
The 25-year-old forward was born in Vantaa, Finland, and grew up in Jyväskylä as part of a basketball family. Lauri’s parents, father Pekka and mother Riika Markkanen (nee Ellonen) were both basketball players, and his father attended the University of Kansas where he played for the Jayhawks.
The elder Markkanen had 129 caps for the Finland national team and was voted the Finnish Basketball Player of the Year three times (1989, 1993 and 1996).
Lauri’s siblings, brother Miika and Eero are also athletes. Miika played basketball while Eero is a soccer player who plays as a striker for HIFK in Finland.
Meet Lauri Markkanen’s wife Verna Aho and their children
Lauri Markkanen’s wife is Verna Aho, who he tied the knot with in 2017. Like Lauri, Verna is Finnish, and they met during their high school days back in their homeland.
Verna is on Instagram but keeps a low profile as her account is private. However, Lauri has paid tribute to his wife on his own IG before.
In 2020 he sent her a happy birthday message with the caption: ‘Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife!! Thank you for being my best friend and the best Mom our son could ask for! See you soon.’
Markkanen and his wife welcomed their first son, Alvar, in February 2018. In 2020, Lauri announced the birth of his second child via Instagram:
Over the years he has posted several photos with his family, like the ones seen here:
Lauri seems to be winning both on and off the court.
