What we know about Keegan Murray’s parents

Keegan Murray was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on 19 August 2000. Keegan Murray’s parents are Michelle and Kenyon Murray.

His father, Kenyon, is a former basketball player who, like Keegan, played collegiate basketball for Iowa. His mom, Michelle, was a four-sport athlete in high school and played golf in college.

Keegan’s parents met at the the University of Iowa, with his dad telling KCRG: “We met each other and it was love at first sight.”

His dad was a college basketball star

Kenyon was a 6ft 5in wing, who averaged 26 points and 10 rebounds at Battle Creek Central.

Per Detroit Free Press, he was named Michigan Mr Basketball in 1992 – the only player from Battle Creek to win the award – and finished with 1,448 career points, a city and school record.

He made the 1992 McDonald’s All-American game, then started 95 of 124 games in four years at Iowa, where he ranks third in school history with 200 steals and 16th with 1,230 points.

Michelle and Kenyon married before moving to Ottumwa, Iowa, after Kenyon got a basketball assistant coaching job at Indian Hills Community College.

Kenyon Murray later became a pharmaceutical medical salesman. Michelle Murray worked at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids and has worked for University Of Iowa Hospitals And Clinics for the past seven years.

Speaking about Keegan entering the 2022 NBA Draft, Kenyon Murray said: “As a parent, it’s just great to see your kids’ hard work come into fruition, especially on a stage like this where less than 1 per cent of any basketball player is gonna have an opportunity to play at that level. It’s pretty cool to see.”

Keegan has a twin brother, Kris

Keegan Murray has a twin brother, Kris. He was named after dad Kenyon’s college teammate Chris Street, who was tragically killed in a car accident.

The twins attended Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 2019 and eventually went to DME Academy, a post-graduate basketball school in Daytona Beach, Florida. They then got scholarship offers from Iowa and played for the Hawkeyes. Kris was a sophomore on the 2021-22 roster.

Speaking about raising the boys, Michelle told The Gazette: “I’m so grateful God chose us to raise them. We spent a lot of time with the kids, reading to them. We had flashcards we did with them all the time. I taught them sign language when they were little.

“We would have family movie night, family game night. We just loved being together and we appreciated the times we could be together. We’ve always had a calmness in our home.”

Murray’s other siblings

Keegan Murray also has a younger sister, McKenna, who plays basketball at Prairie.

The Murrays also adopted Demetrius Harper seven years ago. Demetrius was a star athlete at Prairie at the time and went on to play college football at Coe.

“We talked a lot about it. We prayed about it. It was the right thing to do.” Kenyon Murray said. “Seven years later we are still here.”

Demetrius will reportedly play arena football this year for the new Cedar Rapids River Kings.
